Grants of up to $5,000 to Utah K-12 public schools for STEM-related activities. Eligible uses of funding include student supplies, registration fees, and travel to and from in-state events. Funding is intended to support the involvement of students in events such as science fairs, academic decathlons, and other STEM-focused competitions and events throughout the state.

The following are recognized as approved STEM Competitions:

  • Science Fairs
  • Academic Decathalon
  • Envirothon
  • FIRST programming (e.g. FIRST Robotics, FIRST Lego League, FIRST Jr. Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge)
  • Science Olympiad
  • VEX Robotics

The STEM Action Center must be contacted for prior approval for competitions not included in this list.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Award amounts range between $500 to $5,000. Maximum funding amounts will be determined based on the number of students participating. Program costs cannot exceed an average amount of $100.00 per student. However, applicants should feel no obligation to request $100.00 per student.

Term of Contract:

This contract will end on June 30.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

This program will provide funding to public education institutions to support students' participation and involvement in STEM-focused competitions throughout the state.

Applications must be completed by a school-level representative on behalf of the students benefiting from the grant.

Non-Allowable uses of funding:
- T-shirts or other apparel
- Meals and food
- Items used for decoration
- Teacher stipends or salaries
- Printers, laptops and other hardware not required for competition
- Team building activities (i.e. visits to a local children’s museum)

Applicants should not include expenses for higher-level competitions (national or world competitions) in their budget.

- Application opens for submissions: August 1, 2022
- Applications are due: September 30, 2022, 5:00 pm

Each school is allowed one school-wide application. As part of the submission process, the application must be reviewed and approved by a district/LEA administrator.

Each school participating in this grant application is asked to send one representative from their school to participate in the STEM Competition Grant review. The review will be conducted virtually. Applications will be available for review on October 1 and must be completed before midnight October 10.
